Our History

George Elementary was opened in 1992 and named after Mr. Gene George of George's Inc.  Among many other benevolent endeavors over the years, the George family donated the land on which George Elementary is located.

Over many years, George Elementary has received recognitions for academic excellence, physical education efforts, excellence in teaching, and other accolades.  Recent academic recognitions include being designated in the top 5% and top 10% for academic growth in Arkansas.  One important distinction is the creation of Watch D.O.G.S, which stands for “Dads of George Students.”  This family engagement effort sought to involve dads and other male role models in the school environment.  From this, Watch D.O.G.S (now Dads of Great Students) became a national program used as a model for parental involvement for men.

Recent academic recognitions include being designated in the top 5% and top 10% for academic growth in Arkansas, as recently as 2021.  In 2022, George Elementary was recognized by the Office for Education Policy (OEP) at the University of Arkansas as a school where students demonstrated high growth on the ACT Aspire. The OEP creates an annual report entitled the Outstanding Educational Performance Awards where we recognize schools with high student academic growth. George Elementary was awarded High Overall Growth (Statewide), High ELA Growth (Statewide), and Overall Growth (Northwest Region).  Most recently, for the 2022-23 school year, George Elementary received Highly Effective Schools Accreditation by Solution Tree, a company dedicated to school improvement at the national level.

On March 30, 2022 George Elementary school was struck by an EF-3 tornado, resulting in damage to the school’s roof, exterior, playground, cafeteria and entrance awning. The school’s exterior gym was completely destroyed. George Elementary will undergo an $11.2 million remodel to be paid for by insurance proceeds, district funds and state partnership funding. The projected project will impact areas that include the school’s gym, library, kitchen, main office and music classroom.  In spite of this, George Elementary continues to be a place where students are safe, loved, and ready to learn.
